I am convinced that Scott wrote a number of books which deserve to have an enduring classic states. I am convinced that to see this it is necessary to discriminate very sharply. Few, if any, of our greatest authors wrote such a mass of careless and inferior work. Moreover, the lines of division, in the main, are strikingly clear. The second half of this volume discusses in detail the five books which form the core of achievement. To these can be added without reservation The Two Drovers and The Highland Widow, and, with various exceptions and allowances, The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose. In addition, there are two books which are masterly in part, but contain inferior or discordant elements--Guy Mannering and The Antiquary. Of the rest of Scott's voluminous writings, much is sensible, superficial stuff, written by a busy, intelligent, man of the world in the spirit of a journalist, much was exciting at the time it was written but can never, so far as we can see, be so again, and some is downright sensational and trashy.
