With a short bibliography and many quotes from inscriptions on coins. - Fine, just a small older owner s inscription to title, a little dusty but mostly clean (no stamps etc). Sober modern binding in red cloth.

12mo, 1 p, 7 lines. Good, on light aged paper, with 1 cm closed tear to top corner (not affecting text, which is clear and entire). Reads 'I regret having to inform you that the Salford Mayoralty Seal has broken all to pieces in the process of hardening and that I am afraid that I am obliged to engrave another which I am proceeding with as expeditiously as possible'.

Several illustrations and tables. Good, though lightly aged, and with some wear and creasing to the wraps, which are blue on the outside and pink internally. Several other items by Ratcliff are recorded, but this item is rare, with no copy listed on COPAC.

The section of 'Eggs of the Farne Islands' consists of fifteen entries on pp.8-9, from '1. Eider or St. Cuthbert's Duck (Somateria mollissima)' to '15. Rock Pipit (Anthus aquaticus) | Case of Puffins and Young.' This section is followed by a curious 'Miscellaneous Collection', including 'Ivy Leaves from Thorwaldsen's Grave, Copenhagen', 'Cegars from Coomassie, Ashantee, 1874' and ' "A Duel," made from the claws, etc., of Crayfish (Astacus fluviatilus) at Strasbourg, 26th July, 1879, and given to exhibitor'. Item 30 is a ' "Knuckle Duster" ' (first recorded use of the term?). Final section includes oil paintings by T. H. Gibb, Percy Forster and F. Melville. The only copy on COPAC at Newcastle. It is self-contained and the only part of numismatic interest. The engravings show around 400 coins with both sides. Most were issued to celebrate jubilees, weddings, victories etc, which are explained in the accompanying text. - Titel with an old collector s stamp (crowned initials with motto), only minor browning, mostly clean inside, binding strongly rubbed, spine with damage to both ends, corners bumped, but solid, inside fine.
