Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Herbert Cole et al. (illustratore). Reprint. M.V. (Mollie) Hughes is best known for her four volumes of autobiography, starting with "A London Child of the 1870s" first published in 1934, and followed by books covering the 1880s and 1890s. These three are usually considered a trilogy, but later (in the style of Douglas Adams) it became a trilogy in four parts when "A London Family Between the Wars" was added in 1940. They were all re-issued in attractive Oxford paperbacks in the late 1970s/1980s. Anyway, enough of what we don't have; how about this "About England" book? It's a chatty and entertaining series of observations on the Englishness that makes England so English. Divided into sections on trees, weather, inns, shops, villages, London, sport, etc. Part travelogue, part social history. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Westminster, and 40 or so black and white drawings by a number of diverse hands, all uncredited. The most important of the artists I can make out is Herbert Cole. First published in 1927, this is a reprint with an additional chapter. Name on endpaper, spine slightly faded, but a very good copy. MC.

For more than six thousand years, these five themes have appeared in countless works of art across the vast continent of Africa. The cultural ideals and values they embody are central to the lives of African peoples. Herbert M. Cole calls these timeless fundamental images icons. In this fascinating book, Cole explores the many different ways the icons have been depicted, used, and interpreted. 'Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa' is lavishly illustrated iwth more than two hundred photographs. Cole discusses such diverse works as ancient rock paintings and engravings, archaeological bronzes and terra-cottas, wooden shrine sculptors, miniature metal castings, public monuments in clay or cement, shop signs, gold and ivory political emblems, and modern glass paintings. 'Icons' is both a noteworthy contribution to scholarship and a compelling introduction to the vitality, richness, and history of African art." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Introduction: Icons, ideals, and powers; Useful images: the life of art in Africa; Iconic conventions: the ideology of form; Two as one: the male and female couple; Maternity and abundance: the woman and child; Hunters, warriors, and heroes: the forceful male; Riders of power: the mounted leader; Ambiguous aliens: the stranger in African art history; Change and continuity: the icons in twentieth-century art.
