Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 1997. ix, 103pp. Author Pat Dennison's own copy with her signature to the top of the title page. Rubbing to spine. Minor wear and light soiling to covers. The book is otherwise in very good condition. B&W images, maps and plans throughout. Folding colour map to rear. "Nairn has h…ad many roles through time: from a small medieval burgh with its burgage plots and associated castle; to a small seventeenth-century town which could not meet its taxation dues; to an early eighteenth-century garrison town beset with billeted troops; and emerging in the nineteenth century as one of the premier resorts of Scotland. The classic burgh plan of medieval Nairn is still visible today; but was this the original 'Invernairn'? Some clues suggest that twelfth-century Nairn became inundated with water and was forced to relocate to a more protected site in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. This book is part of the Scottish burgh survey-a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.". SIGNED COPY.

"North Queensferry owes its existence to the ferries which provided transport across the Forth. Throughout the middle ages most of the inhabitants were involved in manning the ferry crossing and providing accommodation and sustenance to travellers. In the eighteenth century various industries were established including two quarries, a chemical works and a brickworks. The 'Queen Margaret', the first steam ferry boat on the Forth, was launched in 1821, the Forth Rail Bridge was opened in 1890, and by the end of the century, the village was a favourite resort for 'sea-bathing', rowing regattas and golf. In the twentieth century, the peninsula saw many decades of military presence. Forf…ar was an important residence of early Scottish kings, and may have received burgh status as early as the reign of David I (1124-53). In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Forfar remained a small market town. The growth of the textile industry in the latter part of the eighteenth century saw the town begin to expand until, by the nineteenth century, it was a major linen-producing centre. In this volume the history and archaeology of the town are described, as are its historic buildings, and the origins of its street names.".

"Part of the Scottish Burgh Survey, this book provides an accessible and broad-ranging synthesis of existing knowledge on historic Dunbar, as well as offering conservation guidance fo…r future development. Dunbar's rich past is reflected in the diversity of its surviving archaeology - prehistoric enclosures to the south of the town, Iron Age and Anglian settlement in Castle Park, the medieval castle, its friary, tolbooth, parish church, as well as later buildings such as the Belhaven Brewery and the harbour warehouses. The authors look at the archaeological potential of key sites in the town, to direct more detailed research and further the conservation of Dunbar's heritage." Crease to rear cover, otherwise in excellent condition with no inscriptions. "The first mention of Dalkeith occurs c 1143 when David I (1124-53) granted land at 'Dolchet' [Dalkeith] to Hol…yrood Abbey; but there was probably already a castle and settlement here, perhaps in the present Dalkeith Parks. The town entered an era of increased trade and prosperity when it became a free burgh of barony in 1401. With its strategic location, and its position-at times almost centre stage in the political arena, the varying fortunes of Dalkeith through the centuries mirror those of Scotland as a whole. Historic Dalkeith is a fascinating study of the town's history and archaeology from its medieval origins up to the nineteenth century, its historic buildings including St Nicholas' Chapel and Dalkeith Palace, its geography and topography, and the origins of its streets and street names. This book is part of the Scottish burgh survey-a series designed to identify which areas of Scotland's historic burghs are of archaeological interest.".
