Catharine Merrill (1824-1900) was an educator who served roughly four years in the Civil War as a nurse in Indiana and Kentucky. Returning from the War, Merrill became the second female university professor in the country when she accepted a position at North Western Christian University (now Butler University). Later in her career, she wrote The Soldier of Indiana in the War for the Union at the request of Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton. The book documented the experiences of soldiers during the war, but was published anonymously to preserve her modesty and maintain focus on the soldiers and their sacrifices.

Clean and tight throughout. With some offsetting from the jacket flaps to the front and rear endpapers. In an attractive dust jacket with the price of $3.50 but with the front spine fold separated. This copy appears unread. In the publisher's suppressed first state jacket, $17.50 on the front flap, "10/71" date code on rear flap, light shelf wear, bright illustrations, a near fine example. The first state jacket, designed by Larry Rivers, was distributed to subscribers and advance reviewers. It was suppressed because of the depiction of a nude male on the front cover and was replaced with a typographic jacket. The Collected Poems of Frank O'Hara, published posthumously, shared the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry.

Complete with three lithographs and two woodcuts in Volume I, five lithographs and three woodcuts in Volume II. Each volume with frontispiece portrait and tissue guard. Volume I has fore-edge painting of Strand-on-the-Green, Volume II of Kew Bridge. Strand-on-the-Green is a medieval village in Chiswick, England that still stands today, previously used as a trading location for businesses due to its access to the River Thames. Kew Bridge crosses the Thames and connects the districts of Kew and Chiswick. The bridge depicted in the fore-edge of Volume II is the second of three bridges at this location. This one being opened in 1789 and demolished in 1899.
