Condizione: Near Fine. Third edition, second issue. Small quarto. [iv], 22, [24, index], 543, [21]. 8.5" x 5.5" ROYALLY SCREWED Jonathan Carver (1710-1780) was determined to discover a waterway to the Pacific Ocean. Dreaming of the King's gold reward and armed with surveying skills from his time in the French and Indian War, Carver pressed into the upper Mississippi River Valley in 1766, backed by a contract with Robert Rogers. For the next two years, Carver pushed farther into the West than any other English explorer had, interacting with the Sioux people and traversing many of the Great Lakes. Carver returned, ready to accept his reward, only to find that Rogers had been placed in solitary confinement for treason due to his lack of authority to order the expedition. Carver would spend the rest of his life petitioning the crown for payment, only to die a pauper. Although his dreams of riches were never realized in his lifetime, the publication of Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America sparked newfound curiosity in western exploration that would eventually be realized in Lewis and Clark. The third edition, second issues was the first printing to include the tobacco plant plate, as well as an index and biography of Carver. This copy features Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov's bookplate to the front pastedown. As a hero of the Napoleonic Wars and prominent Russian oligarch, Vorontsov's large personal library was housed across several cities and covered English architecture to early American cartography. [Howes C215]. Gentle wear to corners, small tide mark to spine, still near fine, in fine custom slipcase with small spot of soiling. Overall an extremely internally clean and tight copy. Eighteenth-century tan tree calf, re-spined with tan speckled calf, red morocco spine label, outer dentelles stamped in gilt, marbled endpapers, housed in custom cloth slipcase. Illustrated with frontis portrait, two hand-colored folding maps, and five copper plate engravings with four hand-colored. (illustratore).…
