The author begins by acknowledging the primacy of the faculty psychology that posited that the mind comprised a number of distinct functions each pertaining to a specialised mental capacity, and which could be trained in isolation from others. This idea underpins the notion of formal discipline - that mental discipline acquired through certain studies, such as mathematics, could be applied across subjects and situations. Experimental evidence, however, casts doubt on this theory. The author's own studies indicate that while there is some transfer of training, this is not wholesale, and the possibility and extent of such transfer is determined by the degree of similarity between the activities involved. The author further argues that training in a particular subject also benefits general mental habits, presenting arguments for the possibility of generalised habits and discussing the role of ideals and emotions in determining behaviour. The author concludes by emphasising that while formal discipline is not a panacea for education, neither should its potential for improving learning outcomes be discounted, suggesting instead that educators work to design curricula and teaching practices that allow for maximum transfer of training.
