Condizione: Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed golden yellow wraps. The wraps are darkened & lightly bumped with a small stain to the rear wrap. Pages [305]-336. There is a small piece out of the bottom corner of each of the last 5 leaves & the top page corners are lightly bumped. Good. The editor, John Middleton Murry, explains in a note on the rear wrap that "The Adelphi" is being temporarily edited from The Adelphi Centre in Langham, Essex, a center founded in anticipation of the war to support "works of constructive pacifism" and to explore "new forms of social living". It combined a refuge for victims of bombing raids, a community farm and market garden and educational activities directed towards the regeneration of society. Also announced is the death of Max Plowman, the previous editor, at the age of 57. "His death was attributed to the severity of his exertions at the Adelphi Centre."This issue is mainly concerned with the war. Among the contents are an article by Murry on Rudolph Hess; "What is War?" by Reginald Reynold; and poems by Elizabeth Welch MacKenzie and Alex. Comfort.

Magazine. 32p. including covers, 5.5x8.5 inches, very good digest-size magazine in stapled pictorial wraps. Have Yourself a Gay Vacation This July by Farr. The Feminie Viewpoint. But Not Alone by Otis. The Traffic in Pornography by Comfort. One, Inc., which took its name from Thomas Carlyle's statement that "A mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one," was founded in LA in 1952 as a homophile organization with connections to the Mattachine Society. As the first pro-gay journal of its kind, it serves as an important source for pre-Stonewall homophile studies. In 1954 the US Post Office declared it obscene, leading to a four-year legal battle (chronicled in its pages) that concluded with a favorable decision as part of Roth vs. United States. Aside from its articles covering topics ranging from the Beatniks and Gay marriage to homosexuality and national security, One Magazine also featured poetry and short fiction by numerous prominent authors.
