The author examines the transformation of illustration in the late nineteenth century, highlighting the role of Alexander W. Drake, a pioneer in the development of black and white illustration. Drake, as superintendent of the Century Magazine Art Department, led the charge against restrictive artistic conventions, fostering a new generation of American illustrators. The book discusses the shift from traditional wood engraving to the use of paper and photography, opening the door to a wider range of artistic styles and techniques. The author also delves into the practical aspects of printing, providing insights into the technicalities of typesetting, engraving, and color printing. The author's insightful analysis of Drake's achievements offers a captivating perspective on the evolution of visual art and its impact on printing during a pivotal era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

No Jacket. viii, 264, [5] leaves of plates : ill. ; 21 cm. ; OCLC 15175658 ; LCCN 03032798 ; LC PZ3.M9677 Wh ; Frontispiece and plates facing p. 34, 94, 190 and 240, some signed by Walker Eng. Co ; black cloth with gold lettering and designs ; no dustjacket ; originally published, John P. Morton & Company, Louisville, Kentucky, 1903, ; written by Cornelia Randolph, the daughter of John Hampden Randolph (1813-1883) ; who was an American planter and businessman. Born into a wealthy Virginia family, when his father was appointed to be a federal judge in the lower Mississippi River valley in 1823, Randolph moved with his parents to the then-remote Natchez District of the Mississippi Territory. Randolph may have worked as a slave trader to supplement his income as a cotton plantation owner. In the 1840s he moved across the Mississippi River to Louisiana where he entered the sugar business, eventually assembling an expensive sugar works and owning a large area of land in Iberville Parish. His four contiguous plantations were called Nottoway, Blythewood, Forest Home, and Bayou Goula. Most of the land was devoted to sugarcane cultivated by an enslaved labor force but the fields were interspersed with timberland and cypress swamp. Randolph became quite wealthy by the 1850s and commissioned a large, storybook mansion house at Nottoway. ; Letters, stories, and diary entries from her life in Louisiana before the Civil War ; Origin of the pseudonym: "Ailenroc" is her first name spelled backward, and "M. R." are the initials of her married and maiden names, Murrell and Randolph, respectively ; she married Dr. David Gamble Murrell, nicknamed The Young Corporal, who was also a sculptor of note ; Cornelia Randolph Murrell is buried in Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana ; "Although the story opens with a description of the brilliant court of the Second Empire, the principal incidents occur in the White Castle, Louisiana, notably the romantic love affair which runs through two generations. The Empress Eugenie, Napoleon, the Audubons and other celebrated characters are introduced with scenes of slave life which happened before the Civil War. Most of the events, however, occur in war times." -- Publisher's Weekly, Jan 23, 1904; FINE. Book.
