Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. VERY POPULAR CHEMISTRY TEXT OF THE 1800S. WRITTEN BY A FEMALE AUTHOR. Contemporary leather, v. worn, front board loose. Comstock's Chemistry was not actually written by Comstock (whose name appears on the title page), but by an English woman by the name of Jane Marcet, who lived in London for many years. She was rarely given credit for her work, although her book went through numerous editions in both England and the United States, where it was the most popular chemistry text during the first half of the 1800s. She presented chemistry as a series of conversations among a hypothetical teacher Mrs. B. and two students Emily and Caroline. Jane Marcet, born into a wealthy London family, was the daughter of a prominent Swiss banker. Encouraged in her education, she married Alexander John Gaspard Marcet, a Swiss physician, in 1799. The couple shared intellectual interests and engaged with leading scientists, including Sir Humphry Davy. Inspired by Davy's lectures and discussions with her husband, Marcet wrote Conversations on Chemistry. The book influenced figures like Michael Faraday, who credited it with sparking his interest in chemistry. The book saw sixteen editions in England, with Marcet continuously updating it, though her name was not publicly associated with it until the 1830s. It also gained international recognition, with editions published in the United States, France, and Germany. (Note: we have much more material written by Jane Marcet - feel free to inquire).
