Hardcover. Condizione: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 144 pages. Published in 2026. Exhibition Catalog, presented as an Artist Book. A most beautifully conceived and realized book on the art and achievement of filmmaker Gus Van Sant as a full-fledged visual artist. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only by a small fine press. The production values, subtle and sublime, are outstanding in every respect: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray hard boards with white paper and cloth pictorial overlays, as issued. Art by Gus Van Sant. Text (in English) by Dennis Congdon appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Gus Van Sant: Paintings". A compendium of a decade's worth of work (between 2010 and 2021), it evokes the melancholy - yet also exhilarating - beauty of his oeuvre. His influences are self-evident and unmistakable: Warhol on the one hand ("hard" silkscreen paintings) and David Hockney on the other ("soft" pastel watercolors). Their influence is stylistic as well as "subjective": Portraits of handsome and desirable young men, who will remind his film-work admirers of his handsome and desirable - if disaffected and troubled - cinematic anti-heroes, as portrayed by such figures as Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix, among others. They are (per Dennis Congdon) "calmly celestial" Lost Boys, auras more than mere model-subjects. "Sequenced in a non-chronological and associative manner, the book presents different series in surprising rhythms, focusing on recurring motifs and themes throughout widely varied modes accumulated during decades of work. Bound inside out, this hardcover publication has a unique objecthood that imparts the suggestion of having been intimately handled by its makers. The Outside Covers feature two test screen-prints, alluding to Gus Van Sant's painting practice as the 'flipside' of his career in filmmaking" (Publisher's blurb). Also includes his "Mona Lisa" reiterations using various modernizing media. The book is auspicious for another reason: As the inaugural title of Blue Moon Press, the Artist Book Imprint of the legendary arts and culture magazine Blue Moon (issued since 2015). An absolute "must-have" title for Gus Van Sant collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed (initialled, as is his custom) in black pen-marker on the first page by Gus Van Sant. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It is also very boldly and beautifully signed (in full, not as customary) on top of the Back Cover itself by Gus Van Sant. This title is an Artist Book collectible. This is the only such double-signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing we have ever found, is available online, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the greatest film artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 1098093402. Signed by Author.

First Edition. Signed by the author, director, artist Gus Van Sant. 137 pages, plus index. With an essay, Lightness In the Paintings of Gus Van Sant, by artist Dennis Congdon. As new without jacket as issued. Much like the artist himself, everything about this offering has a relevant and interesting point to make, from the binding - an innovative inside-out deconstructed hardcover design, to the images themselves - ranging from urban flash to more painterly and nuanced. From the conclusion of a five-page conversation with the editor Leah Gudmundson at the end of the book: ÒLG: So it came as second nature to Hockney to be continually drawing, whereas youÕve spent so much time making films, thatÕs whatÕs more habitual to you as an author of expression. GVS: For me, making films is second nature; making paintings is more dependent on the input.Ó This is Blue Moon PressÕs first publication and marks a promising entry into the fine printing and publishing world. Gus Van Sant has directed some of modern cinemaÕs most intriguing films, including My Own Private Idaho (1991), Drugstore Cowboy (1989), Good Will Hunting (1997), Finding Forester (2000), Milk (2008), as well as numerous music videos for Elton John, David Bowie, Chris Isaak, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and more. He has received two Academy Award Best Director nominations for Good Will Hunting and Milk.
