Als das spanische Volk eine demokratische Republik wählte und daraufhin dem bewaffneten Überfall der eigenen und fremden Faschisten ausgeliefert wurde, stand auch die Autorin, zusammen mit ihrem weiten Mann, einem hohen Fliegeroffizier, auf der Seite der spanischen Republik. Mit außerordentlichem Verständnis für die Ereignisse schildert sie den Kampf ihres Volkes gegen den Faschismus und zeigt die Hintergründe, die zur Niederlage des demokratischen Spaniens führten.
