Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Association copy belonging to Horace White (1834-1916), Republican journalist and editor for the Chicago Journal and Chicago Tribune. Includes two-page letter from author to White, dated January 8, 1914. Letter begins: "You may recall our little talk on Fifth avenue, near the University Club, the other day, about Senator Turnbull, & Chicago older times." Cook mentions White in passing on p. 222. White's neo-classical bookplate affixed to inside cover. 400 pp.; 8.5 x 5.75 in. (letter 8.5 x 11 in.). Very good. Spine tips bumped, small closed tear to bottom of spine. Small closed tears and creases to top of letter. Cook on pre-fire Chicago in Bygone Days: "Chicago just before the fire was much like the catastrophe that befell it. The city struck many as a titanic natural force: unpredictable, unstoppable, all-consuming, and impossible to ignore. To try to get a precise sense of what pre-fire Chicago was like is to misunderstand it, because what the city embodied above all else was change." Biographical note from the Papers of Abraham Lincoln: "Born in Colebrook, New Hampshire, Horace White was a journalist, writer, editor, and Republican. After graduating from Beloit College in Wisconsin in 1853, he relocated to Chicago, Illinois. There, he became editor of the Chicago Journal. He also worked for the Associated Press for a time, and, in 1857, was an editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune. In 1856, he was assistant secretary of the Kansas National Committee, a relief aid organization which performed fundraising and sent supplies, arms, and anti-slavery supporters and emigrants to the Kansas Territory during the struggle to determine the territory's slave status following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. In April 1859, he married Martha H. Root, with whom he had at least three children. White also served as secretary for the Republican State Central Committee, and was the Tribune's Washington correspondent during the Civil War. In 1864, he purchased an interest share in the Tribune, becoming its editor-in-chief about a year later.". Inscribed by Author(s).

This book recalls vivid memories of the Civil War's impact on the people of Chicago, where many flocked to enlist after the shocking assassination of Colonel Ellsworth. The author was himself a young journalist on the scene, recording the city's transformation from an optimistic hub of enlistment to a home front grappling with anti-war sentiment and wartime tragedy, including the Haymarket affair. Through firsthand accounts of prominent citizens, soldiers, and influential women, the author chronicles the city's profound resilience and patriotism amid hardship as it emerged as a major force in the Union cause. The book offers a rich historical record of Chicago's role in the war and the profound impact it had on the city's development. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
