The ten letters at the front contain letters of commendation written in 1838. Gen. Macomb det…ailed Capt. Cooper to compile this handbook, simplified from other Army manuels, to benefit, particularly, volunteer officers. Cooper wnt on to become a General Officer, and, eventually, the Adjutant-General and the highest ranking general in the Confederate Army. This manual has been recommended even for Civil War re-enactors by The Drill Network. This work has many illustrations, but also 20+ pages of instructions for drummers and buglers. The manual instructs the Infantry, the Riflemen, the Artillery, the Cavalry, and the duties and behaviors while being in camps.
