Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. Twelfth Edition of this long-standing medical school standard, originally founded by Frederick R. Bailey in 1904 and substantially revised here by Philip E. Smith and Wilfred M. Copenhaver of Columbia University. This 1948 edition reflects postwar advances in microscopic anatomy and includes numerous black-and-white photomicrographs as well as several color plates illustrating tissue structure, vascular systems, integument, endocrine organs, and pulmonary anatomy. The edition statement and printing history are clearly indicated on the copyright page, which lists 'Twelfth edition, 1948,' with no later reprint statement present in this copy. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt titling and red spine panel. Approximately 750+ pages with index. A solid mid-century medical reference widely used in American medical and dental schools. Near Fine. Firm binding, clean hinges, and bright interior. Light, scattered foxing to top and fore-edge; pages otherwise clean and unmarked. Cloth fresh with minor surface rubbing only. Philip E. Smith (1884-1970) was a prominent American anatomist and endocrinologist associated with Columbia University, known for important experimental work on the pituitary gland and hormonal regulation. Wilfred M. Copenhaver (1902-1986), also of Columbia's College of Physicians and Surgeons, was a respected anatomist and educator whose revisions helped modernize Bailey's classic text for twentieth-century medical curricula. Together they sustained Bailey's Histology as a standard teaching text for generations of medical students.
