Important travail sur les confréries musulmanes, qui aborde notamment la naissance et les développements du soufisme, puis l'organisation et la composition des confréries, leur système financier et leur rôle politique; les auteurs détaillent la confrérie mère des Qadria (Qadiriyya), l'école des Khelouatia, l'école des Chadelia, la confrérie-mère des Naqechabendia (Naqshbandiyya), celle des Saharouardia, puis les Khadiria, ainsi que leurs confréries dérivées. Documentation précieuse réunie sur ces confréries mystiques de l'Islam avec reproductions de sceaux, tableaux, extraits en langue arabe, etc. Le co-auteur Xavier Coppolani (1866-1905), fils d'un colon corse, administrateur colonial français et fondateur du territoire de la Mauritanie, passa son adolescence en Algérie et étudia à l'École Normale de Constantine. Arabisant, il considérait que l'expansion coloniale ne pouvait se faire sans la compréhension des cultures et coutumes locales. Cet ouvrage est issu de sa nomination au service des affaires indigènes et du personnel militaire à Alger en 1896. "On voit par là que cet ouvrage s'adresse autant au politique qu'à l'érudit orientaliste; c'est un livre de sociologie aussi bien que d'érudition" (Compte-rendu, in Revue des études byzantines, Année 1898, 1-10, p. 317).
