Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Binding remains firm. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front.

First published by J & R Maxwell in 1888; This Haddon edition may be a reissue of Maxwell sheets. "Weird thriller involving the mysterious Marquis de Mensonge's scheme to marry Edmie Esden, a young English governess at a girls' school in Paris. De Mensonge is actually Eustache Navette, a powerful mesmerist, who years earlier murdered the real marquis and began an elaborate impersonation of him in order to secure the young nobleman's estate. Navette is assisted by Abed, his Hindu manservant, and Abed's elderly father, a gifted clairvoyant whom Navette uses to spy on his enemies. Other weird elements include Edmie discovering she has some abilities as a medium when she is put into a trance and actually sees the murder that Navette committed. A tedious subplot revolves around Navette being the half-brother of Edmie's employer, Madame Rénan, who turns out to be the former lover of Edmie's guardian, Paul Lorrimer. Despite a few lively scenes, THE MESMERIST'S SECRET is bloated and drawn out, lacking the fast-pacing and over-the-top qualities of first-rate Victorian sensational fiction" (Boyd White).
