Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. MEXICAN MASKS, Donald Cordry, softcover, illustrated (photos on glossy paper), 2-staple binding, 1973. ITEM CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is no…t a library book nor a remainder. The wraps are in near fine condition (small discolored area on back cover where a bookstore price tag was affixed]. 9 ½ x 8 ½, 32 pages, 7 ounces XX This catalog was published to accompany a traveling exhibition of Mexican folk carvings from the collection of Mr and Mrs Donald Cordry of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. XX [From the text] Historical material about masks in Mexico is scarce and difficult to trace. Unfortunately, source information from the earliest chroniclers, the Spanish friars who came with or followed Cortés into Mexico during the 16th century, is not abundant. The few notices concerning masks are very casual and do not show the intense surprise, interest, and even awe that the Spanish conquerors showed for the other beautiful and valuable objects they absconded with, which are now in the great museums of Europe. Even though stone masks were encrusted with jade, turquoise, and other precious materials they were rarely mentioned. This may possibly be explained by the fact that masks were used in Spain at that time and were therefore not unfamiliar to the conquerors, but it is curious that the very different character, materials, and workmanship of masks in Mexico did not command more attention. Ceremonies in which masks were worn may have been enacted secretly to a large extent; because they were concerned with death and burial, they were kept from foreign eyes. Of course some of the masks the Spaniards saw may have looked very much like the masks in this exhibition, as the precious inlaid stone, copper, and gold masks were reserved for royalty and deities on very special occasions. Gods were represented by their characteristic adornments, and the magic power of a mask was one of its principal elements. Masks were used by shamans and magicians long before the Spaniards arrived. There is evidence that masks were in existence by about 1500 B.C., at the time of the Pre-Formative people who inhabited the area of Tlatilco. These people left behind them small clay figures of shamans holding masks in their hands, probably used in magical ceremonies.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. COSTUMES AND WEAVING OF THE ZOQUE INDIANS OF CHIAPAS, MEXICO (Southwest Museum Papers No. 15), Donald Bush Cordry and Dorothy M. Cordry, softcover, illustrated with photos, drawings, charts, and maps, 1964 reprint of 1941 edition. BOOK CONDITION: fine. The text block is in fine condition…with no dog ears, marks, or tears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The beige wraps are in near fine condition. 9 x 6, 130 pages, 10 ounces XX [Wikipedia] The Zoque are an indigenous people of Mexico. They speak variants of the Zoque languages. This group consists of 41,609 people, according to the 2000 census. They live mainly in the northerly sector of Chiapas state, principally in the municipios and towns of Amatán, Copainalá, Chapultenango, Francisco León, Ixhuatán, Ixtacomitán, Jitotol, Ocotepec, Ostuacán, Pantepec, Rayón, Totolapa, Tapilula, Tecpatán, Acala, Blanca Rosa, and Ocozocoautla. They also live in the northern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in the state of Oaxaca, including the Selva Zoque. Their language is also called Zoque, and has several branches and dialects. The Zoque are related to the Mixe. In the pre-Hispanic period, the Zoque lived throughout Chiapas, and Isthmus of Tehuantepec and parts of the state of Tabasco. They are hypothesized to be the descendants of the Olmec. They had a good social and commercial relationship with the later Mexica, which contributed to the economic prosperity of their culture in Chiapas. In 1494 they were invaded and defeated by the Aztecs, during the reign of Ahuizotl, and forced to pay tribute. The Spanish conquest of the Zoque lands commenced in 1523, under the leadership of Luis Marin. The Zoque were parceled out amongst the settlers, where they endured forced labor and were obliged to pay high tribute. Diseases, exploitation and the miserable conditions under which they lived contributed to a significant decrease in their numbers. The situation of the Zoque did not improve with Mexican independence, since they continued to be exploited by the mestizos and criollos. It was not until 1922, when they were assigned ejidos (common lands), that their living conditions improved somewhat.
