The title translates in English to "The Second Adam Suffering For The First Adam, And For All His Descendants. Jesus Dying For The Sins Of Men. Preached In The Form Of Meditations." In French. First edition appears to be from 1692. This is probable 5th Edition. Date of publication not stated, but the 4th edition was published in 1709 and the 6th edition in 1731. Final page includes a Privilege from the Society of Jesus, dated 1714. Thus, publication date was between 1714-1731. A 1.75 inch square cut out of top right corner of title page, yet title letters untouched except for a missing "D" at the end of Second. Intricately detailed engraved frontis. Octavo. Rebound with modern black leather spine and cloth covered boards. Five raised bands and gilt title to spine. Title on spine is misprinted as "Le Secon Adam", consistent with missing letter on title page. Laid paper interior rippled from water damage along top margin throughout most of the book. The dampstaining extends to cover more of the page towards the end of the book. The text remains bright. Occasional spots of foxing. 492 pages. FRE/3153. …

Quelques frottements. Edition rare de ce texte imprimé à Liège, dédié à Jean-Louis D'Elderen, évêque et prince de Liège, duc de Bouillon. Orné d'un étrange frontispice représentant le Christ crucifié sur un pommier au pied duquel s'enroule un serpent entouré de 17 médaillons à la symbolique pour le moins surprenante : un pressoir autour duquel on lit "Amour que tu me presses la sueur de sang", un bras sortant d'un nuage avec en légende "Judas désespère jusqu'à crever", ou bien autour d'une main tenant un compas "Tout est consommé j'achève ici", ou bien encore illustrant un arbre se desséchant "La tristesse au jardin il est tant de pleurer". Tout est curieux dans ce livre y compris les culs-de-lampe gravés sur bois représentant un écureuil, dévorant ce qui semble être une tulipe. Très surprenant ouvrage baroque. Livre ancien.…
