How does it feel when the streets are ruled by gangs and homelife is ruled by an alcoholic, domineering father. Gussie Goonar knows what it feels like. His friends are gang members, running riot with no guidance, but yet he has their back and they have his. His father is a bullying ex-army sergeant now working as a civil servant and his mother is a sweet farmers daughter, trying hard to keep her family together. Due to constant arguments with his eternally drunk father, Gussie leaves home as a young teenager in search of freedom, but he hasnt matured enough to be able to cope with reality. He is hanging around with drop-outs and other youngsters on the margin of society - none of whom trust each other, and soon he finds comfort in alcohol abuse, which leads him through a spiralling tunnel from which there is little chance of escape. But escape is always on Gussies mind, escaping from one thing to another; he enrols in the British Army and cant fit in there either. He soon goes AWOL, running away to London. He is captured and sent back to the army but refuses to soldier on, eventually being discharged and returning to Dublin. His life is a muddle, and added to the disarray he is picked on by a group of bully-boy members of the Gardai, who have tuned in to his vulnerabilities. He becomes frustrated and angry. He inevitably gets into trouble with the law and ends up in prison. While inside, Gussie finds a strange comfort in his surroundings; it is strict and run with military precision and the prison officers are domineering, it is just like homebut yet very different. He takes a job in the prison kitchen and for the first time in his life he has an outlet and a responsibility. He starts to value himself and feels a sense of purpose but now he has to search for the right road to where he wants to be. Still though, despite the chaos of his life, Gussie yearns for something more. He is devastated when he learns of his beloved mothers terminal cancer. He tries to make her proud and takes on a job in Germany, where he learns how to bone meat. But before long his mother dies and Gussie returns to the very place hes been trying to avoid. In the midst of despair Gussie finds himself at a crossroad, and whether its a newfound inner strength or fate, he takes a path not usually familiar to him. In doing so he meets a young woman called Margaret who becomes a source of inspiration for him and offers his a lifeline. However he still has some way to go if hes to find his destiny. One evening Gussie is wrongfully arrested and left battered, bloody and bruised by the thuggish group of Gardai who had been the protagonists throughout his years. A stronger Gussies, who upon accepting that he has not always been law-abiding, swears that he wont let his past prevent him in pursuing these agent provocateurs, who have tarnished the credibility of the police force.
