He acted in the same capacity in other campaigns and during the Great War served in France and Italy. He was highly critical of aspects of the campaign the chaotic transport forced to travel over appalling ground in un-mapped country, vulnerable to sharp-shooting tribesmen who were skilled in guerrilla tactics and against which screw-guns and Maxims were ineffective. It remains one of the most vivid accounts of the campaign.In his Preface, James blames the lack of success of the Expedition on the Indian Government âwho chose to equip the force with inefficient Transport.â.

SB. 316 pp IllustratedPublished Price £11.50 The author, Gerald Campbell, was a special correspondent of The Times early in the Great War, attached to the French army holding the lower section of the Western Front from the famous French fortress town of Verdun to the Vosges hills of Alsace-Lorraine - the âlostâ provinces wrested from France at the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The main body of the book describes the little known - but crucially important - battles of the Frontiers in the opening weeks of the war, when the French hurled themselves on the Germans in brave but extremely costly and largely futile offensives. These battles of 1914 yielded little, and although the Francophile Campbell attempts to put as best a spin as he can on events, he cannot disguise the fact that the war - when his book was published in early 1916 - had bogged down into a bloody stalemate. Ironically, the book was published on the eve of the great battle of Verdun - an even more costly experience for the French army - but one that cost the Germans dear too.

Brief explanatory texts are used to introduce some of the letters and provide context. Each letter runs to several pages, and collectively they offer a vivid first-hand account of the war as seen from a British perspective. Hensman describes, for example, the courageous charge by Afghan Ghazis at the Battle of Ahmed Khel (April 19, 1880) and the desperate, hand-to-hand fighting with British, Sikh, and Gurkha troops that ensued; the Battle of Maiwand (July 27, 1880), in which a force of 2,500 British and Indian troops was routed by a much larger Afghan force; and many other engagements. The book contains ten detailed fmaps of the major military operations and battles of the war. A short appendix provides information about the heights above sea level of places in Afghanistan, distances by road between key points, and transportation in the Indian army.
