Edited and translated by John Addington Symonds, with a biographical sketch of Cellini by Symonds and an introduction to this edition, "Benvenuto Cellini: Artist and Writer," by Royal Cortissoz. Tudor Publishing Company, New York, 1936. Copyright 1906 by Brentano's; copyright page explicitly states "New Edition, March, 1936." This is one of the classic autobiographies of the Renaissance and an unusually vivid first-person account of the artistic, political, and social world of sixteenth-century Italy." Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) was one of the most colorful figures of the Italian Renaissance; a celebrated Florentine goldsmith, sculptor, and medalist whose patrons included popes, kings, and members of the Medici family. His autobiography is an unusually vivid first-person account of Renaissance life, following his career in Florence, Rome, Paris, and elsewhere as he pursued artistic commissions and negotiated the often dangerous world of court and papal patronage. Cellini recounts his artistic ambitions and achievements alongside an extraordinary succession of quarrels, rivalries, romances, travels, duels, violence, imprisonment, escapes, and encounters with some of the most powerful figures of sixteenth-century Europe. Proud, temperamental, boastful, and frequently controversial, Cellini makes little attempt to present himself as a conventional hero, which is part of what has made his memoir so enduring. The result is both the autobiography of an important Renaissance artist and a remarkable eyewitness portrait of the personalities, politics, artistic culture, and everyday life of Renaissance Italy. This edition uses the highly regarded English translation of John Addington Symonds and includes Symonds's biographical material and extensive notes, together with Royal Cortissoz's introductory essay, "Benvenuto Cellini: Artist and Writer." The volume also includes a portrait frontispiece of Cellini, decorative red-and-black title page, pedigree of Cellini, and index. Condition Description. Substantial one-volume edition combining Volumes One and Two of Cellini's celebrated autobiography, together with Symonds's introduction and notes, a pedigree of Cellini, and index.
