Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from February 10 through April 29, 2017. Presents "Sabine Weiss: Intimate Memory". The very first solo exhibition of the artist/photographer (who turned 93 in 2017) in the United States since 1954, or sixty-three years later. "Born in 1924 in Switzerland, she has always maintained a fierce independence and a need to strike out on her own. At just eighteen, during a time when being a photographer was not a common profession, especially for a woman, she took off in order to pursue this passion, riding her bicycle to Geneva. Robert Doisneau discovered her photography and asked her to join the humanist-leaning photo agency Rapho, giving her opportunities to work and travel for many other publications such as Time, Life, Newsweek, and Paris-Match. To this day, much of Weiss' work is still unknown to the general public for personal reasons. She explained that she had kept a tight seal on her black-and-white work from the 1950's. For reasons beyond her control, her first and last solo show in United States took place at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954. It wasn't until recently that she was 're-discovered' in Europe, thanks to the 2016 retrospective at the Jeu de Paume Paris. The exhibition revealed Weiss' diverse output as an artist and defined her as the last representative of the French Humanist School of Photography, with the likes of Robert Doisneau, Izis Bidermanas, and Willy Ronis. An insatiable curiosity and lightness of being have continuously driven her life and photographic work. This is reflected in her remarkable vintage photographs of Paris in the Fifties, filled with compassion, playfulness, and a genuine tenderness toward humanity" (Stephen Daiter). The vintage photographs in the show are "my secret garden, my spiritual nest egg which I kept in reserve, my personal and intimate memory". Photography is "an alibi, a pretext for seeing everything, for going everywhere, for communicating with everyone" (Sabine Weiss). An absolute "must-have" title for Sabine Weiss collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies of Sabine Weiss' books available online command many hundreds of dollars, rightly so. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SABINE WEISS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.

A brilliant production by Wayne F. Miller: Regular-sized print format. Measures 8.5 X 10.5 inches. Professionally (and beautifully) framed with large white borders on solid black wood and Plexiglas by Craig Cotsones/Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago. Full frame size is 18 X 21 inches. Eminently suitable for display. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Wayne F. Miller's "Strike Captain During Protest by The Packing House Workers, March 1948". One of his single most beautiful portraits. It appears as Plate #40 in his classic account, "Chicago's Southside, 1946-1948", published by the University of California School of Journalism in 2000. "Chronicles a black Chicago: The South Side community that burgeoned as thousands of African-Americans, exclusively from the South, settled in the city during the Great Migration. One of the first Western photographers to document the destruction of Hiroshima and the survivors of the bombing, Wayne F. Miller had just returned from his stint as a World War II Navy combat photographer under the direction of Edward Steichen when he received two concurrent Guggenheim Fellowships to fund his Chicago project. In addition to affording a glimpse into the hopes and hardships shared by a community of migrants, the images reflect the enormous variety of human experiences and emotions that occurred at a unique time and place in the American landscape. A superb testament to the genius of the photographer, to the spirit of the people the images portray, and to the moment in American history these photographs capture" (Publisher's blurb). Rightly or wrongly, Wayne F. Miller will probably always be remembered as Edward Steichen's Associate Curator for "The Family of Man" Exhibition because the latter remains the single most influential photographic exhibition ever mounted in the medium's history. It showed eight - a staggering number for one artist - of Miller's photographs. Such recognition is reaffirmed by the present portrait, among Miller's other notable achievements. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item/artwork for Wayne F. Miller collectors. This framed original photographic print is very prominently and beautifully signed in black-ink pen on recto by Wayne F. Miller. This title is a great photographic print. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online, is beautifully framed, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Wayne F. Miller prints command thousands of dollars from his gallery, at art fairs, and at auction. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed print thus. 1 original silver-gelatin print. One of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible print. (SEE ALSO OTHER WAYNE F. The extreme close-up of the model John Erdman's face, used by the artist/photographer as the iconic Cover Image of "Gary Schneider: Portraits" (2004), and one of the artist's most beautiful creations. "Gary Schneider creates unique, luminescent portraits that transform their specific subject matter and probe the enigmatic character of identity. Schneider's re-presentation of nineteenth-century studio portraits, his handprint photograms, and his fragmented face portraits reveal as much about the language of photography as they do about the subjects being depicted. An extraordinary artist" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item/artwork for Gary Schneider collectors.
