Hardcover. Condizione: Good-. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Exterior cloth shows spotting with numerous small holes on both boards. Interior binding is dark brown end pages in front and rear. There is a crack at the front board hinge. Please note: this is an ex-library copy from the St. Alphonsus church of New Orleans, Redemptorist Library. The front pastedown shows a bookplate from the congregation and the title page and front end page are also stamped. There are no markings at the rear end page or pastedown. There are also perhaps a dozen or two pages with light pencil marks: either names underlined or vertical lines marking the paragraphs. These are very light and can be erased if desired.

Coming from Russian Orthodoxy, in 1815 she became a Catholic, largely as the result of reading the writings of Joseph de Maistre, though she had also been under the influence of the Jesuits. Russian law did not permit members of the Russian nobility who had converted from the Orthodox religion to continue living in Russia, and so Sophie was forced to live in exile, choosing Paris as her new home".(wiki).
