FIRST EDITION, EMILY BLACKWELL'S COPY, SIGNED ("Emily Blackwell") on the half-title by the pioneering female doctor, the third woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.Emily (1826-1910) studied medicine at Rush Medical College for a semester, and she completed her training at what is now Case Western Reserve University. She worked with her sister Elizabeth, the first woman in either the United States or Europe to receive a medical degree, at the New York Dispensary for Poor Women and Children, which Elizabeth had founded in 1853. In 1868 the infirmary's medical school for women officially opened. Elizabeth Blackwell served as professor of hygiene and Emily Blackwell as professor of obstetrics and diseases of women. Courty's treatise on childbirth was obviously of direct relevance to Emily's professorship.…
