A representative from the THC examined the site and requested minimal excavation and documentation of the San Pedro Acequia in this location, We recommend that this portion of the San Pedro Acequia is eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. Following the work on the San Pedro Acequia, the VIA Metropolitan Transit System contacted the CAR-UTSA to investigate another area prior to construction of a parking lot, where the Arocha Acequia was believed to be buried. The CAR-UTSA field crew found no indication that any trace of the Arocha Acequia survived in the area. We recommend no further work in this area.

XX [Abstract] "During August 1984, archaeologists from the Center for Archaeological Research, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and City Public Service of San Antonio relocated the burials from Morgan Chapel cemetery in Bastrop County, Texas. 21 burials, of which 13 were unmarked, were located, exposed, recorded, and removed for reinterment in the nearby McDade and Ridgeway cemeteries. The nature of the clay subsoil at the site obscured grave outlines, which made detection of unmarked burials quite difficult. This situation resulted in a decision by CPS, following consultation with representatives of the Texas Historical Commission and the CAR-UTSA archaeologists to remove all the soil from the 3.055 acres of cemetery property to a depth of 6 feet. The excavation procedures utilized during the cemetery removal, and problems encountered during this process, are detailed to aid other archaeologists involved in similar projects. Descendants of the deceased and also other local informants provided details about the identification and location of burials. Information concerning the burial customs and physical condition of the people of this area was gained as a result of the project.

Using techniques brought to Spain from North Africa by the Moors, this 50-mile system of acequiasirrigation ditchesused a variety of ingenious techniques such as hollowed logs, diversion dams and stone aqueducts to coax water from San Pedro Springs and the San Antonio River to homes and fields. It was perhaps the most extensive such network within the presentday United States. Just south of San Antonio, the Espada Mission acequia and its 1740s aqueduct have remained in continuous use.
