Aggiungi al carrelloCloth. Condizione: Good. Edward Lear (illustratore). 1st Edition. A good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 30 hand coloured plates of pigeons from drawings by Edward Lear. Lear provided the illustrations for Pigeons and Parrots in the Naturalist's Library, and his work is distinctive for its accuracy combined with an ability to make the subject seem alive. The Pigeons volume is also unusual in the Naturalist's Library series because the backgrounds to the birds are partly coloured. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Pliny; hand coloured vignette title page with ring pigeons; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert; contents listing; Memoir of Pliny by Andrew Crichton; and text with black and white illustrations and 30 hand coloured plates. Publisher's catalogues at the rear (20pp). The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and is sound and tight. The boards are faded around the edges with light surface scuffing. The spine is faded and with a circular dark mark towards the bottom. The original green endpapers are present: there is a small hole on the front pastedown and a tiny chip out of the side edge of the rear free endpaper. Text pages are generally clean with toning around the edges and the occasional spot or mark. Some of the pages have rough side edges eg the publisher's adverts and some plate edges. There is a small piece missing from the top edge of the volume listing page. The plates are clean and well coloured. The plate paper is toned around the edges and the tissue guards have some offsetting.
