A keen horticulturist he commissioned Henry Ernest Milner to design the gardens, which became famous for spectacular features including the Alpine garden with replica of the Matterhorn. He became treasurer and vice-president of the Linnaean Society. His important survey of Mediaeval Gardens was first published after his death by his daughter in 1924.
