Crawford, J.C. Calhoun, Const. Freeman, Joseph Nourse. Benjamin Williams Crowninshield (December 27, 1772 February 3, 1851) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts and as the United States Secretary of the Navy between 1815 and 1818, during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe. Crowninshield became Secretary of the Navy in January 1815 and managed the transition to a peacetime force in the years following the War of 1812. This included implementation of the new Board of Commissioners administrative system and the building of several ships of the line, the backbone of a much enhanced Navy. He also oversaw strategy and naval policy for the Second Barbary War in 1815. William Harris Crawford (February 24, 1772 September 15, 1834) was an American politician who served as U.S. Secretary of War and U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. In 1813, U.S. President James Madison appointed Crawford as the minister to France, and Crawford held that post for the remainder of the War of 1812. After the war, Madison appointed him to the position of Secretary of War. In October 1816, Madison chose Crawford for the position of Secretary of the Treasury, and Crawford would remain in that office for the remainder of Madison's presidency and for the duration of James Monroe's presidency.

Scattered foxxing and faint tidemark at right side. OCLC 191266876 ; Shaw & Shoemaker 46325 ; Sabin 61047. Transmittal letter signed (in print) B. W. Crowninshield; Additional material signed (in print) John Heath, I. Chauncey, O.H. Perry. Oliver Hazard Perry (1785 1819) was an American naval commander, born in Rhode Island. Oliver was the best-known and most prominent member of the Perry family naval dynasty, and he was older brother of Commodore Matthew C. Perry. Perry served in the West Indies during the Quasi War of 17981800 against France, in the Mediterranean during the Barbary Wars of 18011815, and in the Caribbean fighting piracy and the slave trade, but is most noted for his heroic role in the War of 1812 during the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie. For leading American forces in a decisive naval victory at the Battle of Lake Erie, Perrry received a Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress. For Perry, the post-war years were marred by controversies. In 1815, he commanded Java in the Mediterranean during the Second Barbary War. While moored in Naples, Perry slapped the commander of the ship's Marines, Captain John Heath, whom Perry considered incompetent and insubordinate. The ensuing court-martial found both men guilty, but levied only mild reprimands. After the crew returned home, Heath challenged Perry to a pistol duel, which was fought on October 19, 1817, on the same field in Weehawken, New Jersey where Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton. Heath fired first and missed. Perry declined to return fire, satisfying the Marine's honor.

First edition, House Doc. 66. 8vo. 34 pp. With the ownership signature of Henry St. George Tucker at the head of the title page; Tucker (1780-1848; jurist, U.S. Congressman, 1815-1819) is best known for a trio of legal treatises, Commentaries of the Laws of Virginia (1836-1837), Lectures on Constitutional Law (1843), and A Few Lectures on Natural Law (1844). He lived in Winchester, Virginia, most of his adult life, heading a private law school there, and served as head of the Virginia Court of Appeals, 1831-1841, and as professor of law at the University of Virginia, 1841-1845. Facing the title page is written enigmatically, probably in another hand, "For the Winchester Triumvirate. Contemporaryhalf-sheep and patterned boards (rubbed), gilt rules on spine. (#6366). Perry, the War of 1812 naval hero, clashed with the marine captain while serving as commander of the Java on a Mediterranean cruise. The court martial, reported here, resulted in a reprimand for both officers and a later duel between the pair that resulted in no injuries. The second pamphlet reports on progress between the United States and Spain as negotiations toward the cession of Florida were conducted by John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onis. Though various members of the Tucker family possessed large libraries, books owned by them are uncommon in trade.

The Battle of Cedar Creek, fought October 19, 1864, was the culminating battle of the Valley Campaigns of 1864 during the American Civil War. Confederate Lt. Gen. Jubal Early launched a surprise attack against the encamped army of Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan, across Cedar Creek, northeast of Strasburg, Virginia. During the morning fighting, seven Union infantry divisions were forced to fall back and lost numerous prisoners and cannons. Early failed to continue his attack north of Middletown, and Sheridan, dramatically riding to the battlefield from Winchester, was able to rally his troops to hold a new defensive line. A Union counterattack that afternoon routed Early's army. At the conclusion of this battle, the final Confederate invasion of the North was effectively ended. The Confederacy was never again able to threaten Washington, D.C. through the Shenandoah Valley, nor protect one of its key economic bases in Virginia. The stunning Union victory aided the reelection of Abraham Lincoln and won Sheridan lasting fame. This item is printed on demand.
