Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. Title: The Lives of the Roman Poets - Lewis Crusius - 1753 Third Edition - Vol. I - Fine Gilt Calf Binding Author: Crusius, Lewis (1701-1775) Title: The Lives of the Roman Poets: Containing a Critical and Historical Account of Them and their Writings, with large Quotations of their most celebrated Passages, as far as was necessary to compare and illustrate their several Excellencies, as well as to discover wherein they were deficient. To which is added, a Chronological Table. Together with an Introduction concerning the Origin and Progress of Poetry in general; and an Essay on Dramatick Poetry in particular. Publication Details: London: Printed for W. Innys and J. Richardson, J. Clarke, R. Manby, C. Bathurst, and H. Shute Cox, 1753. Third Edition. Volume I only of two volumes. 12mo. The 1753 edition is bibliographically recorded as a two-volume work. Description: An attractive eighteenth-century copy of Volume I of Lewis Crusius's important biographical and critical study of the classical Roman poets. Crusius combines accounts of the poets' lives with extensive discussion of their writings and quotations from their most celebrated works, comparing their literary strengths and weaknesses. The work also incorporates a chronological table relating the poets to contemporary historical events, an introduction to the development of poetry and an essay on dramatic poetry. This is the Third Edition of 1753, the title page clearly identifying Crusius as formerly of St John's College, Cambridge. The work was sufficiently established to pass through several eighteenth-century editions, and contemporary and later library catalogues consistently record the 1753 edition in two volumes. Binding: Particularly attractive eighteenth-century full calf, with raised bands and elaborate gilt decoration to the spine. Red morocco lettering piece titled "CRUSIUS'S ROMAN POETS" in gilt. Individual compartments are richly tooled with floral and ornamental devices, stars and an elaborate gilt monogram, with a distinctive gilt heraldic crest/crowned device in the upper compartment. Boards with darker borders and considerable period patina. Condition: Good. An attractive and characterful eighteenth-century binding showing considerable age-related wear but remaining visually impressive. Calf boards rubbed and scuffed, with areas of surface abrasion and leather loss, particularly around the margins, corners and joints. The spine shows rubbing, cracking and wear, including a noticeable rubbed area to one compartment, but retains a substantial amount of its original gilt tooling. The red morocco title label remains present and legible. The title page is complete and clearly printed, with some age-toning, spotting and noticeable old staining/damp marking around the upper and outer margins, as visible in the photographs. Further occasional age-related marking should be expected internally.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Printed for the Author, 1726-32. First edition. Quarto, two volumes: [8], liii, 431, [7] p. + [4], 404, 35, [10] p. Period calf bindings, with a red leather spine label and five raised bands. Minor dampstain to the bottom corner of both volumes. Early previous owner's ink signature to each title page. Period bookplate to each front pastedown, alongside the modern bookplate of Paul Naiditch, longtime Curator of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts at the University of California, Los Angeles. Though the hinges and joints are cracked or starting, the bindings are sound. Unobtrusive evidence of nonarchival repair to the joints of the first volume. The spines are darkened, with some spotting to the front board of the first volume. The boards are edgeworn and showing in places. Crusius (1701-75) was an Anglican clergyman and classical scholar. His sole work was The Lives of the Roman Poets, which he supplemented with an introductory essay on the origin of poetry. The work went through three editions by 1753 and was translated into German (1777, 1778). Designed for "the Improvement of Youth and the Entertainment of others", Crusius's writing is polite and self-consciously Augustan in style. He admires the civilizing effect of Horace's satire during "the crisis of Roman greatness" above all else. …
