The Brahmayamalatantra (aka Picumata) is probably one of the earliest surviving Saiva tantras, and possibly the earliest one known to us of the Bhairavatantra tradition. The present volume contains a critical edition and annotated translation of three of its chapters: one on the central mandala of the cult, one on preliminary religious observances (vrata) prescribed for all practitioners (sadhaka), and one on instructions for each individual category of sadhaka - instructions on transgressive sexual rituals for the Talaka, on strict rules of conduct for the chaste Carubhojin, and on a combination of these for the Mixed Practitioner. This unique system of sadhakas marks an early phase in the development of classification of practitioners seeking liberation and magical powers, and gives us an insight into the tantric world of extremes: of rule-bound sexual encounters involving several female partners and highly impure substances on the one hand and of asceticism, strict vegetarianism and chastity on the other. The introduction deals with the main topics raised by the selected chapters, as well as with problems of the sometimes extremely non-standard (Aisa) Sanskrit that the oldest manuscript transmits. One of the appendices provides a summary of the first twenty-five chapters (about one quarter of the Brahmayamala) to facilitate further study. The extensive index includes all important keywords and all major Aisa phenomena.

The work is useful as a primary source for the history of yoga and the Saiva religions: it reveals important links between the tantric cults of Kubjika and Tripura and early hathayoga. In addition, its frame-story (in chapters 1 and 55) relates a unique version of the yogin Matsyendra s legend in which his disciple Goraksa is a Chola king. The edition is bracketed by a detailed introduction and by detailed notes on the constitution of the text, as well as an annotated translation.

Cette oeuvre monumentale, qui s étend sur plus de douze mille stances réparties en 104 chapitres, nous est parvenue dans un précieux manuscrit népalais datant du XI e siècle, lequel constitue la source principale de la présente édition critique. Faisant suite au volume 2 du Brahmayamala édité par Csaba Kiss et publié dans la même collection, ce volume inclut la première édition et la traduction annotée de cinq chapitres de l ouvrage. Le texte lui-même est précédé d études spécialisées de thèmes traités dans ces chapitres, tels que les conceptions de la révélation et du canon propres au tantrisme &sivaïte, l histoire des rites de copulation, la mythologie de Bhairava, ainsi que l iconographie et le symbolisme du bâton coiffé d un crâne (khatvanga). À l instar d autres textes publiés dans la collection Early Tantra, cette étude du Brahmayamala contribue à renouveler notre connaissance du sivaïsme tantrique et plus généralement de la religion dans l Inde du début de la période médiévale.
