Er studierte an der Sorbonne in Paris, 1887 promovierte er mit einer Arbeit über die Stachelhäuter. 1890 wurde er Dozent für Zoologie an der Universität Nancy, 1898 Professor d. Lehrstuhls f. Zoologie. Ab 1894 beschäftigte er sich mit d. Transmissionsgenetik. Nach der Wiederentdeckung der Mendelschen Regeln durch Hugo de Vreis u. Carl Correns (1900) begann er mit Kreuzungsversuchen an Mäusen und konnte als erster nachweisen, daß sich die von Mendel aufgestellten Regeln auch auf Tiere übertragen lassen. 1905 entdeckte er erstmalig die Auswirkung eines letalen Gens (Agouti-Effekt). Von 1908 bis 1912 beschäftigte er sich mit der Vererbung von Krebs bei Mäusen. Nach dem Krieg wandte er sich allgemeineren physiologischen und zoologischen Themen zu. 1931 wurde er zum Mitglied der Academie des Sciences gewählt. 1933 gründete er das zoologische Museum in Nancy.
