Since folk art is linked so inextricably to the life of its people, this catalog is arranged, not by region or subject, not historically or chronologically, but by artistic precedent and social organization. Many examples of French folk art find their sources of inspiration in high art models. The art has grown and developed, influenced by the life cycle of the French rural people. This exhibition and catalog are presented to show how that influence has been felt and how, through a network of peddlers and fairs and markets, the art has been disseminated throughout the countryside.
