Instead, it is an intimate glimpse into the minds and hearts of people in Russia and Uzekistan in middle Asia in 1983 when the USSR was known as "The Iron Curtain" and few Americans were given free rein to meet such a wide variety of people; writers, professors, students, librarians, farm workers, and everyday citizens. There is high humor in this book, as well as heartfelt moments, and it paints vivid pictures of places few Americans have seen or will see. The descriptions are so real that readers will feel they have been there. There is also much in this book for food lovers to enjoy. The descriptions of food, both Russian and Uzbek, are exceptional. Uzbekistan and bordering countries are much in the news today, and this book will give Americans and others an insight into what kind of people the vast majority of Middle Asia citizens are. This also applies to Russians, who are surprisingly like most Americans. In Search of the Russian Bear is unlike any other book set in Eastern Europe and Middle Asia. It is unique and will take readers on a fascinating journey. It could become a classic of its type." - from the inner front jacket flap.
