Savas Beatie Historical Books (Savas Beatie) Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 (VG+/EX) Manufacturer: Savas Beatie Product Line: Historical Books (Savas Beatie) Type: Hardcover Copyright Date: 2007 Author: O. Product Description: The bloody and decisive two-day battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) changed the entire course of the American Civil War. The stunning Northern victory thrust Union commander Ulysses S. Grant into the national spotlight, claimed the life of Confederate commander Albert S. Johnston, and forever buried the notion that the Civil War would be a short conflict. Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles of the entire war, with nearly 24,000 men killed, wounded, and missing. Edward Cunningham, a young Ph.D. candidate studying under the legendary T. Harry Williams at Louisiana State University, researched and wrote Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 in 1966. Although it remained unpublished, many Shiloh experts and park rangers consider it to be the best overall examination of the battle ever written. Indeed, Shiloh historiography is just now catching up with Cunningham, who was decades ahead of modern scholarship. Western Civil War historians Gary D. Joiner and Timothy B. Smith have resurrected Cunningham's beautifully written and deeply researched manuscript from its undeserved obscurity. Fully edited and richly annotated with updated citations and observations, original maps, and a complete order of battle and table of losses, Shiloh and the Western Campaign of 1862 will be welcomed by everyone who enjoys battle history at its finest.

Johnston concentrated his Southern divisions at Corinth, a major railroad center in Mississippi. His bold plan called for his Army of the Mississippi to march north and launch a surprise attack against General Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army of the Tennessee before it could link up with another Union army on the way to join it. The bloody and decisive April 6~ 7, 1862, battle at Shiloh changed the entire course of the American Civil War. When the fighting stopped, the casualties totaled nearly 24,000. The stunning Northern victory thrust Grant into the national spotlight, claimed the life of Johnston, and forever buried the still~lingering notion that the Civil War might be a short conflict. Edward Cunningham was a young Ph.D. candidate in 1966 studying under the legendary Dr. T Harry Williams at Louisiana State University when he researched and wrote Shiloh and the Westem Campaign of 1862. Although it remained unpublished, many Shiloh experts and park rangers consider it to be the best overall treatment of the battle ever written. Indeed, Shiloh historiographv is just now catching up with Cunningham's conclusions. The young doctoral student was decades ahead of modern scholarship. Dr. Cunningham diligently located previously untapped sources rich with personal anecdotes and invigorated his narrative with them. Unlike many historians, Cunningham was not content to accept the standard version of events. Instead, he carefully studied the sources and analyzed what they revealed. For example, he was the first historian to question whether the fighting in the Hornet's Nest was really critical to the outcome of the battle (he concludes it was not); the first to challenge publicly whether more than a dozen different assaults were really launched against the Sunken Road position (he could only confirm seven); and the first to conclude that Daniel Ruggles' artillery~studded line did not have sixty~two Confederate pieces (Ruggles had at most 51 cannon). Dr. Cunningham spent as much ink on the western side of the battlefield around the Crossroads (where the Hamburg~Purdy and Corinth~Pittsburg roads intersect) as he did on any other part of the field. His path~breaking work in that sector turned Shiloh historiography on its head. The combat waged around the Crossroads is now widely recognized as more important to the outcome of the battle than previously believed. Western Civil War historians Drs. Gary D. Joiner and Timothy B. Smith have resurrected Cunningham's beautifully written and deeply researched manuscript from its undeserved obscurity. Fully edited and richly annotated with updated citations and observations, 30 original maps, a complete order of battle, table of losses, photo galleries of the leading generals, and a photographic tour of the field, Shiloh and the Western Campoign of 1862 will be welcomed by everyone who enjoys battle history at its finest.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Not Issued. 1st. Near Fine softcover. 480pp Illustrated with b/w portraits and maps. The bloody and decisive two-day battle of Shiloh (April 6-7, 1862) changed the entire course of the American Civil War. The stunning Northern victory thrust Union commander Ulysses S.…Grant into the national spotlight, claimed the life of Confederate commander Albert S. Johnston, and forever buried the notion that the Civil War would be a short conflict. The conflagration at Shiloh had its roots in the strong Union advance during the winter of 1861-1862 that resulted in the capture of Forts Henry and Donelson in Tennessee. The offensive collapsed General Albert S. Johnston s advanced line in Kentucky and forced him to withdraw all the way to northern Mississippi.
