William Curran, 1938; no additional printings indicated; xiii, [1], 16-256pp. Humorous anecdotes, toasts and jokes divided by a variety of subjects including various ethnic groups, professions, activities, and categories like "Absurd, Fantastic and Ridiculous", "Beefs, Bulls and Blunders", "Dipsy Doos", and "Expurgated" (dirty jokes with their crudest words replaced). Preceded by the author's introductory essay "How to Become a Raconteur". Identified as Volume One, unknown of other volumes were published. Binding is sturdy and fully intact; moderate amount of wear to edges of black cloth boards, light rubbing to cloth, stamped white titling lightly rubbed but otherwise clearly legible; text very good throughout. Wrritten by the famed Irish orator's son and originally published in 1881; this is a Very Good copy of a Later Printing from one year later. Possibly a Pirate Edition; the publisher had multiple bankruptcies and was successfully sued by Mark Twain. Decorative binding of red cloth, stamped in black; titling is red within gilt compartments. Clean text; 535 pages; includes an index and an appendix of anecdotes. The frontis portrait is foxed but the textblock is not affected. The corners are very lightly bumped and there is a small area of fade at the foot of the spine. Despite these minor defects, it remains a solid and attractive copy. Later Printing. Decorative Cloth.
