First book edition of a short story originally printed in Harper's Magazine; one of an unspecified number of copies printed "for distribution as a remembrance at Christmas" (title page). No illustrations. Charley was no ordinary dog: he was a canine comedian of the highest order. He was taffy-colored, with points of resemblance to a police-dog, mastiff and collie. He had the voice of a boarhound and the disposition of an Ed Wynn. He had many other delightful attributes which he displayed generously. The climax of Charley's career started when he attached himself to the household of August Perriot and won his way into the State Legislature. His story abounds in good humor and real entertainment.
