Designed by Suzan Reed (illustratore). Published for the landmark 1997-1998 exhibition at the Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C., A Winding River documents the first major cultural exchange exhibition following the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam. This substantial, well-produced catalogue includes essays, a message from U.S. Ambassador Pete Peterson, artist statements, biographical entries, and numerous full-color reproductions representing leading Vietnamese artists of the post-Doi Moi period. Of note, this copy retains the original laid-in exhibition brochure, in like-new condition, promoting the Meridian show (Nov. 6, 1997-March 15, 1998) and its subsequent national tour (1998-1999). Such ephemeral material is often discarded and is increasingly uncommon. Its presence adds contextual and institutional provenance value. Designed by Suzan Reed and printed by The Stinehour Press, Vermont, this catalogue stands as an important document of late-20th-century Vietnamese art and U.S.-Vietnam cultural diplomacy Walter L. Cutler (1915-2006) was a distinguished American diplomat who served in the U.S. Foreign Service for more than three decades. A graduate of Wesleyan University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, he entered the Foreign Service in 1940 and held a range of posts in the Near East and South Asia. Cutler served as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia twice (1965-1969 and 1975-1978), and later as Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran from 1979-1980 during the period of the Iranian hostage crisis. After retiring from government service, Cutler became President of the Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C., where he played a significant role in advancing international cultural and diplomatic exchange programs. His leadership reflected his long-standing commitment to strengthening ties between the United States and the broader international community.
