Das Fachwörterbuch enthält alle zum Zeitpunkt der Erhebung (1989 bis 1994) im aktiven Fachwortschatz der Handwerker vorhandenen Termini zu siebzehn Handwerken (Bauhandwerk, Färben mit Indigo, Färben von Pflanzenfasern, Flechten, Gerben, Grobschmieden, Herstellung von Gefäßen aus Haut, Holzbearbeitung, Kalebassenflicken, Kalebassenverzierung, Lederverarbeitung, Nähen und Besticken, Schlagen von Stoffen, Spinnen, Töpfern, Weben und Weißschmieden), die von in Nordnigeria ansässigen Hausa ausgeübt werden. Dabei sind die jeweiligen Dialektvarianten (mit entsprechendem Plural bzw. sekundärem Verbalnomen) unter dem Haupteintrag, der weitgehend die Variante des Kano-Dialekts enthält, verzeichnet. Durch ein Verweissystem sind sämtliche Dialektvarianten leicht aufzufinden. Die Haupteinträge sind in Hausa erläutert und ins Englische übertragen und z.T. mit Illustrationen versehen. Zwei ausführliche Indizes (alphabetisch in englischer Sprache und nach den Handwerken sortiert) ermöglichen einen einfachen Zugang. Das Fachlexikon, das nicht auf Grundbedeutungen der aufgeführten Lexeme eingeht und daher in Begleitung eines der großen Wörterbücher zur Hausasprache zu gebrauchen ist, bietet einen vielseitigen Nutzen. Zum einen stellt es eine Bestandsaufnahme der Materialien, Techniken, Werkzeuge und Produkte des Handwerks in den frühen neunziger Jahren dar und ermöglicht durch die Zweisprachigkeit sowohl dem Hausa als auch Fremden den Zugang zu diesem Teil der Kultur. Zum anderen bietet das durchgängig tonierte und mit Längen versehene Werk dem Linguisten eine interessante Fundgrube zu Dialektfragen und Fragen der Lexik und Morphologie. Für Ethnologen bildet es ein Referenzwerk zum Stand dieses Teilbereichs der materiellen Kultur. REZENSION This dictionary has two merits: the first one to offer a large documentation on (ten) Nigerian Hausa dialects in the field of crafts, the second one to have preserved some aspects of Hausa culture. The work is well done on the linguistic point of view, because every word is given in a scientific transcription (i.e. the authors mark tones, vowel length, and even the flapped and rolled r). Another positive aspect of the work is represented by the indication, through some initials, in which field (i.e. carving, sewing, tanning, etc.) the word is in use.
