Else clean, bright, tight, free of inscriptions and stamps. Straight uncreased spine. -- A monograph in theoretical phonology proposing that the organisation of sound systems can be understood through two interacting principles - the complexity of phonological structures and the strength of the nuclei (vowels and vowel positions) that license them. The argument is developed within the framework of Government Phonology, but departs significantly from the standard model, replacing many of its familiar principles and parameters with non-rerankable scales of complexity that operate at different levels of representation. The book works through three broad domains. The first addresses the internal structure of speech sounds, using Element Theory to show that phenomena traditionally explained by sonority, strength and markedness can be derived from the number and arrangement of elements a segment contains - with detailed analyses of Irish and Welsh providing the empirical testing ground. The second domain moves to syllable structure, arguing that the variety of syllable types found across languages reflects a scalar relationship between structural complexity and licensing strength rather than a set of independent parameters. Dutch, Polish and Malayalam serve as case studies, each chosen for the particular challenges it poses to existing accounts of clustering, empty positions and word edges. The third extends the model to word-level phonology, including a substantial treatment of liquid metathesis in the history of Slavic and an analysis of the anomalous consonant clusters found at word edges in Polish and other languages. For researchers and advanced students working in non linear phonology, syllable theory and the typology of consonant clusters who want a worked-out, licensing-based account supported by detailed data from Celtic, Slavic and other languages.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The papers collected in this volume examine selected aspects of the interaction of phonology with phonetics, morphosyntax and the lexicon in a variety of languages including Korean, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, British English, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Dutch and Hawaiian. In order to approach the role and ways of expressing extraphonological information in phonology, the international contributors adopt different methods of analysis (data gathering, experiments, theoretical discussions), couched in various theoretical frameworks (such as Optimality Theory and Government Phonology), which reveal both the multifarious faces and interfaces of modern phonological research.

For decades, the voicing system of Polish has been at the center of a heated theoretical debate concerning laryngeal phonology as it features a number of phenomena that constitute the core of this debate, such as Final Obstruent Devoicing, Regressive Voice Assimilation, and Progressive Voice Assimilation. As research into laryngeal phonology progresses on various fronts, it becomes more obvious that a large portion of the phenomena in question have phonetic or implementational conditioning, thus limiting the role of phonology even further. The model presented here is one in which phonology, phonetic interpretation, and phonetics find their respective homes. Paradoxically, by separating these three levels of description, we wish to integrate the disparate threads of modern research of sound patterns into one sound system.
