An important modern presentation of the writings of Jakob Bohme (1575-1624), the German Christian mystic and visionary sometimes called the "Teutonic Theosopher." Bohme developed a highly individual mystical cosmology using Christian, alchemical and Hermetic language to explore creation, divine manifestation, spiritual polarity and Sophia or Divine Wisdom. This volume presents his Clavis or "Key" - a condensed explanation of the principal concepts and terminology of his mystical philosophy - in the historic English translation of William Law (1686-1761). It is accompanied by Dionysius Andreas Freher's (1649-1728) Illustration of the Deep Principles of Jacob Behmen and its remarkable sequence of thirteen emblematic figures, reproducing Freher's visual interpretation of Bohme's cosmology through sacred geometry, planetary/alchemical symbolism and diagrams of Creation. Adam McLean's introductory essay places Bohme within the seventeenth-century Rosicrucian and Hermetic milieu while appropriately noting that a direct historical connection with the Rosicrucian movement cannot be established. Near Fine condition. An exceptionally clean, tight copy in burgundy publisher's cloth with bright gilt lettering and devices. Boards remain clean and attractive with only very slight evidence of handling; corners and spine ends are sharp, binding tight and square, and interior clean, bright and unmarked. The illustrated plates reproduce very strongly. No dust jacket, as issued. Retains the original Phanes Press promotional pamphlet, advertising The 'Key' of Jacob Boehme and describing both this volume and the larger Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks project. A specialist Weiser Antiquarian record for this exact hardcover edition likewise describes the original publisher's advertising insert accompanying the book and confirms that the cloth issue was published without a dust jacket. There is an important bibliographic distinction here. The copyright page explains that this work had first appeared in 1981 as a handbound edition limited to only 250 copies. The 1991 Phanes Press publication is therefore not the first edition of the text; specialist bookseller Weiser Antiquarian correctly identifies it as the Second Edition but, importantly, the first clothbound edition of Magnum Opus Hermetic Sourceworks No. 9. The series itself was conceived and edited by Adam McLean to make difficult-to-access primary Hermetic material available in carefully presented modern editions rather than merely reproducing old books. Phanes Press, founded by David Fideler, became an important American publisher of Western spiritual and philosophical traditions and eventually incorporated a number of McLean's Sourceworks titles into its program. The surviving publisher's promotional sheet is therefore more than incidental advertising, it documents how Phanes originally presented both Bohme's book and McLean's larger scholarly-esoteric publishing project, and it is particularly desirable retained with a Near Fine hardcover copy.…
