Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good-VG for Age. No Jacket. 1st ed. f/piece with tissue guard+viii+25243 further photo-plates ex-pagination; two early private provenance stamps, one to front pastedown, the other top t.p., these are quite inoffensive - a small (5 x 0.7 cms) oblong with 'Chippens Bank' inside a border; gutter opening before p.9, exposing netting, incipient opening before p.89, last page quite heavily browned, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked, plates collated complete. Blue cloth covers, with gilt lettering & motif to front and gilt lettering to spine, generally clean but slight corner bumping and joints rubbed, spine ends good though very slight rubbing. Taken as a whole the book feels just very slightly shaken. An interesting work by an author who claims, along with her sister, to have been the first European woman to visit the Igbo villages she studied, and whose photographs must be the earliest record of their life-styles. Much on magic 'ju-ju', birth and death customs etc. Scarce. Note: quoted shipping rates are calculated for 500-700 gram net weight, cost will be modified up or down as appropriate outside this range.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers into the mysterious world of Ibibio women in Southern Nigeria. It offers a unique perspective on a culture rarely explored, delving into the intricate web of beliefs, customs, and rituals that govern their lives. The author, a woman who lived among the Ibibio for an extended period, provides a firsthand account of the complex relationship between Ibibio women and the forces of nature, specifically focusing on their understanding of motherhood, fertility, and the spirit world. The book explores the power of juju, a system of magic and fetishism deeply embedded in their culture, and its influence on the lives of Ibibio women. It examines ancient rituals surrounding childbirth, including taboos and practices believed to ensure a healthy and successful delivery. The book also delves into the deeply rooted fear and prejudice surrounding twins in Ibibio society, detailing the tragic consequences of this belief for mothers and their children. The author highlights the stark contrast between these customs and the influence of European contact, revealing the ongoing tension between traditional beliefs and the encroaching forces of change. This book presents an essential and compelling look at a fascinating and often overlooked aspect of West African culture, offering invaluable insights into the beliefs and practices of a powerful and resilient group of women. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
