One of the principal aims of each European University is to improve the quality of higher education and to promote learning opportunities. It is also important to put policy into an international context emphasising innovative teaching and research that can be commonly recognised. Over the last few years the University of Florence started the process by offering some priorities to encourage a network of competitively-appointed universities putting in evidence based learning so that can develop research project leaders and deliverers. Currently, the University of Florence is fully involved in strengthening the internationalisation process such as the development of cooperation among a larger number of partner universities. New agreements are increasingly being made with countries outside the European Union such as the United States, Russia and many Latin American universities, and with institutions in the Mediterranean area, Japan, Republic of China. The University of Florence, in fact, is leading the way in planning and developing high-quality international research networks and policies that work with joined-up thinking and across important scientific topics. We are therefore delighted that our University has shared its resources and knowledge with other European partners to produce such a vital part of thinking and producing important and attractive outcomes in scientific fields as sustainable design and urban complexity.Accordingly, this book introduces issues on improving the experience of living in our cities considering existing heritage values that meet a range of social, environmental and health benefits and should make for more sustainable and dynamic places to live. Good, pro-active management of existing resources today can leave a real legacy for those who will come after us. Libro.

Why is sustainable design to be so significant for today's citiesè Why has it to be seen so significant for nowadays urban life styleè How are to be enhanced sustainable design from theoretical and practical point of viewè What are the key implications for society and authorities for the design processè What can we do to implement sustainability into the historic context and what can we learn from the past about design to be implemented in the contemporary cityè How should we understand the integration of urban and architectural design and what kind of urban form can be identified for sustainable designè What is the relation between sustainability and participative designè What is the role of landscape and energy form and in relation to technologyè Despite the extreme difficulty to set out perfect answers to all above questions, the choice to define out significant benefits and conflicts of sustainability in all its dimensions needs to be deeply analysed as much as possible. This book follows directly from ECOPOLIS: Sustainable Planning and Design Principles and is the second volume of the Cities, Design&Sustainability Series, which explores more deeply how high quality design is likely to have a positive impact and compatibility on the spatial, environmental, social and economic conditions of places and people. The book explores in detail sustainability issues that have taken on a greater importance. It examines the effect of conducting specific studies on revealing and enhancing sustainable design for the determination of urban areas of importance, offering advice to all those who are involved in designing cities. Hopefully, the impact of such studies should be significant on the methodological approach to design by characterizing the urban quality and by defining the constraints which should be implemented on urban development and regeneration. Moreover, it sets out the need on how sustainability can be successfully integrated with the design process attempting to evaluate its impact on the nowadays cities. Libro.

To explore all factors of urban change in European cities it is necessary to understand how, politically and physically, is possible to tentatively reach positive scenarios for sustainable urban transformation. An understanding of the built environment and its evolution over time can better allow to respond to what is needed for designing a sustainable environment. Sustainability de_nition for urban change seems to be positive in relation to some key issues as: common intentions/ different themes/scale of intervention/heritage value/time-space-building. In thinking around these issues one should consider to give some answers and long-term solutions in sustainable planning and design. To learn afterwards how to design the transforming city with sustainability, considering heritage values, governmental and regulatory rules of site, depends more on designers' ethics rather on speci_c user's needs. Consequently, the sustainable change concerning urban development and regeneration should be based on: - An appraisal of tangible and intangible heritage values - A conscious reading of the physical transformation of sites and buildings through time - The conservation of historic pattern of urban areas and the maintenance of historic buildings - The well planned and integrated new development into the existing area and to the natural environment - The delivery of eco-sustainable design. This book is about to understand essential aspects of sustainable urban change, and especially investigates on the current quality of built environment of the transforming city. The book is divided into four parts in order to offer the reader source of information on urban change and lessons to be learnt from various contexts and experiences throughout Europe. It is an introductive contribution to contemporary city transformation but can stimulate the debate and re_ects the exchange of evolving ideas and experiences among academics of different European contexts. Throughout, the selection of material presented here the following chapters seek to identify urban transformation as context, chronos, culture value, scale, typology of intervention. Dimitra Babalis is Senior Lecturer and Joint Professor in Town Planning and Urban Design at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Florence, and an Architect-Engineer. She is currently the LLP/Erasmus Coordinator for the Building Engineering Degree Course and Coordinator and Chair of Erasmus Intensive Programmes. She is Visiting Professor in various European Universities. Her research interests and funded European and Italian projects have moved from eco-sustainable planning and urban design, urban regeneration and development to innovative urban strategies and forms of interventions. Multi-disciplinary inquiry into the sustainability, regeneration and evaluation of industrial heritage, re-development and re-use of industrial buildings and sites, Innovative policies and strategies to urban transformation, concepts and principles of sustainable urban transformation. She is author of a number of scientic publications on national and international reviews and proceedings books, of chapters in books and the editor of the books: Bioclimatic Design & Urban Regeneration for Sustainable Development (2003), Ecological Design for an Effective Urban Regeneration (2004), Ecopolis. Sustainable Planning and Design Principles (2005), Ecopolis. Revealing and Enhancing Sustainable Design (2006), Ecopolis.Conceptualising and Defining Sustainable Design (2007). She is author of the book, URBAN DESIGN, The Ecological Thinking. A Compendium (2008).This Series seeks to present some new conceptions concerning the today's and future cities role in supporting sustainable communities. The Series will discuss the latest issues in planning, designing and building a. Libro.
