Humorous fictional autobiography of a self-righteous prig, rediscovered by Anthony Burgess circa 1966 (when he wrote a new introduction for the next known Heinemann printing) and quite a hard book to find in any original, pre-war Heinemann binding. The real author, Sir Henry Howarth Bashford Kt., M.D., F.R.C.P., was reportedly Chief Medical Officer to the Post Office, Medical Adviser to the Treasury, and Honorary Physician to King George VI, while illustrator "Robin" -- who renders most of the characters here as chinless pinheads -- is reliably reported to have actually been Miss Marjorie Blood, a frequent contributor to "Punch," who subsequently joined the Order of the Sacred Heart and became Mother Catherine at Roehampton Convent. 274 pp. Reduced from $550. Recently rebound in half leather with gilt titles to blue and black title labels five raised bands, blue cloth boards, in very good condition, complete with all plates as called for. This copy includes a 15 page 'Orders received for the Life of Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, K.B. Previous to its Publication' and a 45 page 'Explanation of the Engravings' which includes a detailed description of the engravings (source, painting, artist, dimensions of the original work etc). The Pre-publication Orders includes all the pre-orders for this work including from Admiral the Right Hon. Lord Viscount Hood, Governor of Greenwich Hospital. Against this entry is the word 'Proofs'. Boards faded and marked, with rubbing and wear to edges and extremities; leather with associated age wear. Several old mechanical piercing/puncture holes pass through the front board/endpapers and into the early leaves, diminishing through the opening portion of the volume to approximately p.29. These have been physically inspected and are piercing holes rather than insect or worm damage. The piercing appears principally confined to the opening portion of the book and does not appear materially to impair the legibility of the printed text in the leaves inspected. Printed title page with noticeable foxing and scattered spotting; endpapers also foxed and marked. Text with general age-toning, moderate scattered browning and occasional spotting consistent with an early nineteenth-century folio. The hand-coloured aquatint plates are generally Good to Very Good and form the great strength of the copy. Colour remains attractive and often notably bright. Some plates show scattered spotting, foxing or light marginal toning, with occasional offsetting or handling marks, but the principal image areas are generally well preserved. The plates of Boadicea, the Grand Conventional Festival of the Britons at Stonehenge, Roman British Priestesses, Hibernian Costume, Pagan Irish Costume and the Saxon Chief are particularly appealing. Additional hand-coloured aquatint title/frontispiece present.
