Après le décès de son mari en 1816, la Comtesse WALEWSKA épousa le général Comte d'ORNANO, un fidèle de NAPOLEON, futur Maréchal de France et cousin de l'Empereur. L…a famille d'ORNANO possédait donc des archives et des lettres de la comtesse particulièrement intéressantes. C'est 'arrière petit-fils du général et de la comtesse qui s'attache dans ce livre à suivre pas à pas les étapes de l'existence de la Comtesse WALEWSKA. S'il y parvient c'est parce qu'il a parcouru la Pologne pour y retrouver les traces et les souvenirs de Marie WALEWSKA. C'est surtout grâce aux confidences écrites par elle-même et conservées par la famille d'ORNANO qui authentifie ce qui pourrait paraître étrange dans le récit et qui, loin de cotoyer seulement la vérité, en est l'expression la plus fidèle. « Elle n'était pas précisément grande, mais elle avait la taille bien prise, les cheveux blonds, le teint clair, la figure pleine, un sourire extrêmement agréable et un timbre de voix qui la rendait sympathique aussitôt qu'elle parlait; modeste et sans prétention, très réservée dans ses gestes et toujours très simple dans sa toilette, elle avait comme femme tout ce qu'il faut pour plaire et être aimée » ( Comtesse KIELMANNSEGGE). De leur première rencontre au Palais PONIATOWSKI à Varsovie en 1807 à leur ultime adieu au Château de La Malmaison après Waterloo en 1815, l'extraordinaire aventure sentimentale de NAPOLEON et Marie WALEWSKA. Cette jeune, belle et fidèle Comtesse Polonaise qui lui donnera un fils et dont il confiera à MONTHOLON au soir de sa vie de captif à Sainte-Hélène qu'elle seule, sans doute, l'avait véritablement aimé.
