Chr.) zijn behandeld als hoogste rechterlijke instantie in het Romeinse rijk. Zij zijn afkomstig uit wat twee werken van de hand van de Romeinse jurist Julius Paulus lijken te zijn: de Decretorum libri tres en de Imperialium sententiarum in cognitionibus prolatarum libri sex. De werken van Paulus zijn uniek. Geen enkele andere Romeinse jurist heeft ooit een dergelijke collectie van rechterlijke uitspraken van één of verschillende keizers uitgegeven. Daarnaast zijn Paulus' verslagen bijzonder gedetailleerd. Hij beschrijft niet alleen de procedure bij het keizerlijk gerechtshof maar ook de beraadslagingen van de keizer met diens adviesraad die hierna plaatsvonden. Zijn verslagen bieden hierdoor een inkijk in het besluitvormingsproces aan de top van de keizerlijke bureaucratie en de personen en belangen die hierbij een rol speelden. Dit onderzoek beoogt door middel van een juridische en historische analyse van de verslagen van Paulus een beeld te schetsen van de rechterlijke activiteiten van Septimius Severus en dit te relateren aan de constitutionele, institutionele en historische context waarin de beslissingen van Severus en - in het verlengde daarvan - de rechtspraakverzamelingen van Paulus tot stand zijn gekomen. De bestudering van de wisselwerking tussen context en inhoud maakt het vervolgens mogelijk om de motieven van Paulus voor het publiceren van de rechterlijke uitspraken van Septimius Severus te achterhalen.
