Es wird von der Europäischen…Kommission finanziert und startete offiziell im August 1998. Das Projekt wurde 1999 mit einer Laufzeit von drei Jahren begonnen, durch einen Zusatzvertrag verlängert und am 31. Dezember 2003 offiziell abgeschlossen. Die Abkürzung IPAMED steht für Inventar des mittelmeerischen Kulturerbes; der Untertitel 'Informatisierte Karte des Kulturerbes' soll daran erinnern, dass es sich um eine Ausbildung im geografischen Informationssystem GIS (englisch GIS) handelt. Die Inventarisierung ist eine der Prioritäten für jede Arbeit am kulturellen Erbe. Es ist die Voraussetzung für seine Kenntnis, Erhaltung und Aufwertung. Bei der Inventarisierung werden je nach den spezifischen Merkmalen des jeweiligen Untersuchungsfeldes, seinen spezifischen Zwängen und den angestrebten Zielen unterschiedliche Vorgehensweisen gewählt.
