In so doing, it shows that what would become the point-of-view shot developed from the interposition, between the eye and the world, of a prosthesis capable of modifying the conditions needed to access the visible, and thus to expand the potential of human vision. Moreover, the book offers inspiration for further research on modern (and postmodern) vision as a mediated vision, an important topic in contemporary debates in the digital media landscape.

Titoli come "Stromboli", "Europa '51", "Ingrid Bergman", "Giovanna d'Arco al rogo" e "La paura" appaiono segnati da un'omogeneità profonda, legata a una fase della sperimentazione rosselliniana in cui la possibilità di usare un'attrice come la Bergman in chiave antidivistica si rivela funzionale alla messa in scena della diversità. L'uso libero e spregiudicato del linguaggio cinematografico resiste alle manipolazioni più vistose e influenzerà le Nouvelles Vagues a venire. A tre anni di distanza dalla prima, questa seconda edizione integra e accresce i risultati precedentemente raggiunti grazie a un ulteriore lavoro di scavo su importanti e inediti documenti d'archivio, che arricchiscono la sezione "Documenti" con nuovi materiali cartacei e fotografici e ribadiscono la forza di film così fortemente voluti da Rossellini.
