Titoli come "Stromboli", "Europa '51", "Ingrid Bergman", "Giovanna d'Arco al rogo" e "La paura" appaiono segnati da un'omogeneità profonda, legata a una fase della sperimentazione rosselliniana in cui la possibilità di usare un'attrice come la Bergman in chiave antidivistica si rivela funzionale alla messa in scena della diversità. L'uso libero e spregiudicato del linguaggio cinematografico resiste alle manipolazioni più vistose e influenzerà le Nouvelles Vagues a venire.
