Presents "Early And Unknown: Photographs From The Archive of Joseph Sterling". Some of the photographer's earliest work that demonstrate a level of technical and expressive accomplishment: Abstract studies, landscape, street photography, and portrait. Joseph Sterling hid them from public view. They were discovered only after his widow (Sterling died unexpectedly on November 12, 2010) finally showed them to Stephen Daiter Gallery. Closely identified with the Institute of Design (ID), Sterling's work is characterized by the technical perfection and formal experimentation identified with the Bauhaus-inspired Institute. His best-known work, "The Adolescent Comedy", departs from Bauhaus aesthetics, and the result is simply wonderful. An absolute "must-have" title for Joseph Sterling collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. 18 duotone plates. It is formally rigorous yet highly experimental work whose underlying, near-obsessive thread is the complex interaction between light and shadow, particularly its infinite possibilities. Stiegler received his Bachelor's Degree in 1960 and his Master's Degree in 1970 from the Institute of Design (ID), where he studied under Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. He was part of a now-iconic group of photographers who include Barbara Crane, Kenneth Josephson, Tom Rago, and Richard Nickel. Robert Stiegler died before his time in 1990 at the age of fifty-two. So it's a blessing that his work is in the Permanent Collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Eastman House, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, and the University of Illinois Chicago. An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Stiegler collectors. This title is now collectible. Published posthumously, THE definitive presentation of one of the best photographic records of The American Teen-ager. As originally conceived by Sterling for his Master's Thesis in 1962, the vintage prints were considerably darker than the later, contemporary prints he made. "In photography, the heart of the artistic message often has as much to do with how it is printed as with what it depicts. It is not just what you say, but how you say it. The prints in Sterling's original thesis really say it imbued with the angst, insecurity, alienation, and edginess of adolescence" (Stephen Daiter). "The Adolescent Comedy" was also Sterling's original title for the sequence. It is both apt and ironic, as it shows American kids to be both playful and serious, friendly and menacing, cheerful and pensive. They anticipate the work of many contemporary photographers without their necessarily being aware of it. Their remarkable simplicity and effortless grace have re-appeared in so many images of young people ever since. Still, few photographs have the timeless appeal as Sterling's work.
