Cover woodcut by Marcel Rasmussen. keywords: Europe Scandinavia Denmark Literature Translated Music Songs Anthology World Literature. DESCRIPTION - This collection includes ballads, humorous ditties, epic songs, and lyrics, some of them being as late as the sensation-seeking broadside prints of the eighteenth century. Thus the book gives the reader a highly varied sampling of Danish folk poetry. The ballads and folk songs, and their melodies, although ancient, are still alive. They have become a source of inspiration to poets, composers, and illustrators. Already before 1800 their influence was felt in literature as well as in musical life. - The historical ballad is an expression of the popular concept of the Middle Ages and modern works of art and literature often draw their themes from the world of the folk song. Many of the greatest Danish poets have paraphrased motives of well-known ballads. The ballads and folk songs - the most original literary contribution by the Eastern Scandinavia in the Middle Ages - were never fully forgotten. Together with the less known and cherished later songs, they have contributed much to the Danes' own understanding, as well as that of others, of Danish poetry, Danish history and ancestry, and Danish character. inventory #36778.
